WHAT IS PADEL?
Padel, which is growing rapidly all over the world, is played on an enclosed court about a third of the size of a tennis court. In very simple terms, padel is a combination of tennis and squash in the same sport. Mostly played in doubles. The rules are the same as tennis, played with the same balls, although serving is under-hand and the walls are used as part of the game.
WHO CAN PLAY?
Padel is Inclusive! Padel stands out as an inclusive sport due to its accessibility and adaptability. The sport can be played by people of all ages, irrespective of their fitness levels or abilities.
Padel is great for all ages; it’s not power dominant and caters to all levels of play. With limited racquet skills players can quickly engage in dynamic and fun rallies, utilising the court’s surroundings
PADEL IS SOCIABLE!
Padel is played in doubles, which makes it a very social and fun sport, therefore ideal for the entire family and mixed ability friendship groups as well as providing opportunities to meet and play with others at padel socials.
WHAT EQUIPMENT DO I NEED?
Sports clothing and non-marking shoes. Tennis shoes, especially those designed for clay courts, are a solid option for padel. They offer similar support and traction and many players wear them interchangeably. But if you’re planning to play regularly, padel-specific shoes are worth the investment. They’re designed with the sport’s unique demands in mind, from how the court feels underfoot to how players move in doubles formations. If you’re a beginner and haven’t bought specific shoes yet, don’t worry. A pair of clean, flat-soled gym shoes with decent grip is fine for your first few sessions. Just make sure they’re in good condition and don’t have excessive cushioning or worn-out soles. At Rocks Lane, we’re happy to guide you as you find the right gear for your level. If you’re unsure what to go for, just ask one of our coaches during your session.
You will need a padel racket and padel balls. Rackets are available to hire and there is a large selection to buy from each centre’s clubhouse reception. A racket testing centre is available at Rocks Lane Chiswick with advice from our highly experienced team and coaches.
New padel balls are available to buy from the clubhouse receptions. Note. Padel balls have slightly less pressure than the traditional tennis ball.

Online Consultation
Proposed Padel Courts at Rocks Lane Bishops Park
TFC Leisure Ltd, working with Hammersmith & Fulham Council, is exploring an early-stage idea to introduce four high-quality padel courts on the site of the existing single tennis courts next to the garden centre.
No planning application has been submitted.
This consultation is about listening first — understanding local views, questions, and concerns before any decision and design work progresses.
What’s Being Suggested?
• Four panoramic padel courts fitted within the existing tennis court footprint
• No new floodlights — existing lighting columns would be reused
• Acoustic fencing and natural materials to reduce noise and soften visual impact
• A professionally managed facility with pre-booked sessions only
This proposal is designed to make better use of the current courts while respecting the park setting and nearby homes.
Why Padel?
Padel is one of the UK’s fastest-growing sports and is known for being:
• Inclusive and social — easy to learn for beginners
• Low-impact — suitable for a wide range of ages and abilities
• Community-focused — typically played as doubles
• Complementary to tennis, not a replacement
The proposal would introduce an additional recreational option without reducing overall tennis provision, helping more people stay active and enjoy Rocks Lane Bishops Park.
Noise & Lighting — At a Glance
• Acoustic fencing designed to reduce noise by approximately 8–12 dB
• All sessions pre-booked, with clear behaviour and conduct guidelines
• No amplified sound (no music or PA systems)
• Supervised operation
• No new lighting structures
• Operating hours limited to 8:00am – 9:00pm
Noise, lighting, and neighbour impact will be key considerations in shaping any future design.
Have Your Say
We want to hear from park users and nearby residents.
Opportunities to get involved:
• Drop-in consultation at Bishops Park Tennis Pavilion (date to be confirmed)
• On-site walkthrough, allowing you to see the proposed area and ask questions
• Online feedback form (below)
All feedback will be reviewed and will directly influence whether — and how — the project progresses.
A Note for Nearby Residents
We understand that living close to Bishops Park means any proposed change can feel personal.
Our priority is to ensure that nearby residents continue to enjoy their homes and surroundings. If this project moves forward, it will be carefully designed and managed to:
• Minimise noise
• Respect existing views
• Protect the character of the park
Your feedback at this stage genuinely matters and will help shape the final design and operation.
If you’d like to ask a question or share your thoughts directly, please feel free to contact us at any time by either dropping into the tennis pavilion to speak with the team, send an email to bishopspark@rockslane.co.uk or give the team at Rocks Lane Bishops Park Tennis Centre a call on 020277363854.
